Compare tube structures, barrier performance, cost and suitable cosmetic applications

Multilayer Cosmetic Tubes: 2-Layer vs 5-Layer vs 7-Layer 1

What Are Multilayer Cosmetic Tubes?

Multilayer cosmetic tubes are produced with two or more material layers combined into one tube wall.

Each layer can serve a different purpose, such as:

  • Providing structural strength

  • Improving squeeze recovery

  • Creating a smoother inner surface

  • Supporting color and decoration

  • Improving formula protection

  • Adding an oxygen or aroma barrier

The important point is that more layers do not automatically mean a better tube.

The correct structure depends on the formula, required barrier performance, packaging feel and project budget.

2-Layer Cosmetic Tubes

A 2-layer tube is a relatively simple co-extruded structure.

Both layers are typically based on PE materials, although the exact resin combination can be adjusted according to the required stiffness, flexibility and surface appearance.

Advantages

  • Simple structure

  • Cost-effective

  • Good flexibility

  • Suitable for many standard skincare and personal care products

  • Good compatibility with common cosmetic tube printing and decoration

Limitations

  • Limited barrier performance compared with structures containing a dedicated barrier layer

  • Less suitable for formulas that are sensitive to oxygen or aroma loss

  • Fewer structural layers available for fine-tuning tube performance

Typical applications: cleansers, body lotions, hand creams and other relatively stable formulas.

5-Layer Cosmetic Tubes

A 5 layer cosmetic tube is commonly selected when better formula protection is required.

A typical 5-layer co-extruded structure may use:

PE / Tie Layer / EVOH / Tie Layer / PE

In this type of construction, EVOH acts as a functional barrier layer, while the tie layers help bond materials that would not otherwise adhere well to each other.

Advantages

  • Better oxygen barrier than a basic PE structure

  • Helps reduce aroma loss

  • Suitable for more demanding skincare formulas

  • Maintains the flexibility of a squeeze tube

  • Good balance between performance and cost

Limitations

  • Higher cost than a basic 2-layer tube

  • More complex production structure

  • Actual barrier performance depends on layer thickness and material selection

  • Not every formula requires this level of protection

Typical applications: facial creams, treatment products, active skincare and formulas requiring improved barrier protection.

7-Layer Cosmetic Tubes

A 7 layer cosmetic tube uses a more complex co-extruded wall structure.

The exact construction can vary by project. Additional layers may be used to divide the inner or outer PE structure into more functional sections, allowing greater control over stiffness, flexibility, surface feel and overall wall performance.

In some designs, the structure may still contain a central barrier layer such as EVOH, while the surrounding polymer layers are optimized for different functions.

Advantages

  • Greater flexibility in structural design

  • More options for balancing stiffness and squeezability

  • Can support advanced barrier structures

  • Allows more precise control of inner and outer layer performance

  • Suitable for technically demanding packaging projects

Limitations

  • Higher production cost

  • More complex material structure

  • Longer development and testing may be required

  • Additional layers do not automatically mean proportionally higher barrier performance

Typical applications: premium skincare, sensitive formulas and projects requiring more customized tube performance.

Does More Layers Mean Better Barrier Performance?

Not necessarily.

This is one of the most important points when selecting multilayer cosmetic tubes.

Barrier performance depends on several factors:

  • Type of barrier material

  • Thickness of the barrier layer

  • Total tube wall thickness

  • Distribution of each layer

  • Formula characteristics

  • Storage conditions

For example, a properly designed 5-layer structure with an effective EVOH barrier can provide better formula protection than a 7-layer structure that is not optimized for the same barrier requirement.

Therefore, tube layer count should never be evaluated alone.

Why Is EVOH Used in Multilayer Tubes?

EVOH is commonly used as a barrier material in multilayer packaging.

Its main function is to reduce the transmission of gases such as oxygen through the tube wall.

This can be useful for formulas containing:

  • Oxidation-sensitive ingredients

  • Fragrances

  • Active skincare ingredients

  • Formulas where long-term stability is important

However, EVOH does not replace formula compatibility testing.

The complete tube structure still needs to be evaluated with the actual product before mass production.

Which Tube Structure Should You Choose?

A simple selection guideline can help:

Choose a 2-Layer Tube When:

  • The formula is relatively stable

  • High barrier performance is not required

  • Cost efficiency is important

  • The product is a cleanser, lotion or general personal care product

Choose a 5-Layer Tube When:

  • Better oxygen protection is required

  • The formula contains active ingredients

  • Aroma retention is important

  • You need a stronger balance between barrier performance and cost

Choose a 7-Layer Tube When:

  • The project requires more precise structural control

  • Tube feel and stiffness need additional customization

  • The formula or packaging specification is more demanding

  • A more advanced multilayer design is required

Formula Testing Matters More Than Layer Count

The same tube structure does not work equally well for every cosmetic formula.

Formula viscosity, active ingredients, fragrance, oil content and storage conditions can all affect packaging performance.

That is why JIIHO recommends compatibility testing before confirming mass production.

A technically appropriate tube should be selected based on the formula first, rather than simply choosing the highest number of layers.
