Why Full-Coverage Hot Stamping Can Crack During Cosmetic Tube Sealing

Understand why foil cracks after tail sealing and how to reduce production risks

Why Does Hot Stamping Crack After Tail Sealing?

In cosmetic tube production, a decoration defect may not become visible until the next manufacturing stage.

With full-coverage hot stamping on cosmetic tubes, the metallic foil can appear smooth and intact after stamping. However, when the open tube tail is compressed and sealed, the decorated surface in the affected area may deform, causing the foil layer to crack.

The issue is related to the interaction between the decorative layer and the physical changes that occur during sealing. The foil layer may not accommodate the deformation of the tube as well as the underlying material.

This is a production issue JIIHO has encountered in customer projects. It shows why checking the tube immediately after printing is not enough.

Why Are Offset and Screen Printing Different?

In the production case described above, offset and screen printing did not present the same cracking issue. However, the result depends on the ink system, decoration coverage, tube material and production conditions.

Decoration Method Main Characteristic Consideration During Tail Sealing
Offset printing Suitable for detailed graphics and rich colors Check ink adhesion and the finished print after sealing
Screen printing Can provide strong color coverage and a distinct surface feel Confirm ink flexibility and adhesion
Full-coverage hot stamping Creates a continuous metallic finish Foil may crack if the decorated area is stressed during sealing

The key difference is that hot stamping uses a metallic foil layer. When the tube deforms during sealing, that layer may crack even if the decoration looked perfect beforehand.

This does not mean hot stamping is unsuitable for cosmetic tubes. It means full-coverage designs require additional evaluation at the sealing stage.

How Can Manufacturers Reduce the Risk?

1. Keep the tail-sealing area in mind during artwork design.

If the design allows, avoid extending hot stamping into areas that undergo significant deformation during sealing. A reserved sealing zone can reduce the risk of visible cracking.

2. Test the complete production process.

Do not approve a hot-stamped tube based only on its appearance after decoration. Run samples through the actual tail-sealing process and inspect the finished seal.

3. Review the foil and material combination.

The stamping foil, tube substrate and decoration conditions should be evaluated together. Adhesion and flexibility requirements may vary between materials and foil systems.

4. Optimize sealing parameters through testing.

Sealing temperature, pressure and dwell time should be checked against the tube material and sealing equipment. Changes must still achieve a reliable seal, so adjustments should be validated rather than made by guesswork.

What Should Buyers Confirm Before Mass Production?

For a full-coverage metallic design, confirm these points before approving the order:

  • Has the hot-stamped tube passed tail-sealing trials?

  • Is there any cracking, peeling or lifting around the sealed area?

  • Does the finished package maintain both appearance and seal integrity?

  • Have the decoration and sealing conditions been confirmed for mass production?

A successful print is not necessarily a successful finished package. The decorated tube should be evaluated after the manufacturing steps that can affect its surface.

JIIHO's Recommendation

For full-coverage hot stamping, the most important check is not just how the tube looks after printing, but how the foil performs after tail sealing.

JIIHO recommends validating the complete process during sampling, especially when the metallic finish extends into an area that will be compressed or deformed.

Contact JIIHO to evaluate printing and tail-sealing compatibility before finalizing your cosmetic tube design.
